Important Update for Fulton and Coweta County Seniors: Check Your Tax Bills for New School Tax Savings

As your State Representative, fighting to make retirement more affordable and keeping property taxes manageable has been one of my top priorities. I was proud to co-sponsor and champion the landmark senior school tax exemption legislation for both Fulton and Coweta counties.

If you are a senior homeowner in our community, you should be receiving your property tax bills right now. I want to strongly encourage everyone to open their bills immediately, review the line items, and double-check that your hard-earned savings have been correctly applied.

Breakdown of the Senior School Tax Exemptions

Fulton County

  • Ages 65 and Older: Eligible homeowners receive a 25% reduction of the property's assessed value from Fulton County School taxes (requires having a basic homestead exemption for 5 of the last 6 years).
  • Ages 70 and Older: Eligible homeowners receive a massive 50% reduction of the property's assessed value from Fulton County School taxes (requires having a basic homestead exemption for 5 of the last 6 years).
  • Note: For many qualifying homeowners with an existing basic homestead exemption, these updates are applied automatically.

Coweta County

  • Ages 65 to 70: Homestead exemption raised to $75,000 of the assessed value from school ad valorem taxes.
  • Ages 71 to 74: Homestead exemption raised to $100,000 of the assessed value.
  • Ages 75 and Older: Qualifies for a full 100% exemption from all Coweta County School District ad valorem taxes for educational purposes.
